5. A Key Could Have Potentially Saved the Titanic

In 2007, 85 years after the tragic event, a key was put up for auction. You may wonder what’s so special about this ordinary item that we decided to include it on our Titanic facts lists.

Well, apparently the key was believed to open the crow’s nest locker containing binoculars. Yes—binoculars or the equipment that could have potentially saved the Titanic from catastrophe These objects were essential in detecting threats to ships during the day.

Second Officer David Blair, the owner of the key, was taken off the crew right before the Titanic set sail, and due to the last-minute change, he forgot to give the key to his replacement, Charles Lightoller.

Given the fact that the crow’s nest lookouts didn’t have binoculars, they had to use their eyes to keep an eye on any threats. It has been claimed that if they had had glasses, they could have detected the iceberg sooner.

That’s one of the most mind-bending Titanic facts. Unfortunately, the key may never be able to open the locker housing those metaphorical keys that could have saved so many lives.
