Oranges aren’t typical fruits.
Oranges are an iconic fruit, but, as it turns out, they are not naturally occurring. As a matter of fact, oranges are a hybrid of tangerines and pomelos, which are also known as “Chinese grapefruit.” Also, it seems that they were originally green, not orange.
They are a wildly beloved subtropical fruit, but nowadays, they can be easily found in other temperate climates. In fact, given the fact that they can grow in other types of climates too, they lost their chlorophyll-induced green, becoming, as their name suggests, yellow when the weather warms up.
High heels were originally worn only by men.
Back in the 10th century, men in Europe were eager to try the newest fashion choice: heels. It seems that it was much easier for them to ride their horses (I know, right?). Also, adding heels to their boots made it much easier to stay in their stirrups.
Apparently, it all started in the Persian cavalry, and then it easily spread to Europe. Since they initially showed that the wearer owned and maintained horses, high heels instantly became associated with wealth and the upper class.
Stop signs used to be yellow.
In 1922, the American Association of State Highway Officials gathered to decide on the standard design for stop signs. That’s when they decided on the right color, which wasn’t red but yellow. According to Business Insider, they decided on the yellow color because it grabbed drivers’ attention.
They also thought about red, but no dye was available at the time that was also known to resist. However, by 1954, sign makers had gained access to fade-resistant porcelain enamel and were able to start making stop signs in the red color we know so well.
