Competitive art used to be a sport in the Olympics.

Between 1912 and 1948, the Olympic Games awarded medals in music, painting, sculpture, and architecture, as the Smithsonian magazine mentioned. After a very heated debate in the post-war years, the competitions were ultimately scrapped.

The last person to win such a medal was John Copley of Britain. At 73 years old, he was the oldest medalist in Olympic history, and he won a silver medal as an award for his 1948 engraving “Polo Players.”
