Future Coastal Flooding Will Be a Nightmare for These 28 Cities

Future Coastal Flooding

Panama City, Panama

According to experts, Panama City’s Casco Viejo and its exclusive Costa del Este neighborhood will likely be submerged by 2050. The city was founded in 1519 by Spanish conquistador Pedro Arias de Ávila and became the first European settlement along the shores of the Pacific.

Climate Central says the 17th and 18th-century military fortifications on Panama’s Caribbean coast are also at stake. The defense system has been on UNESCO’s risk list since 2012 because of a few environmental factors, including future coastal flooding.

Mumbai, India

New predictions show that the financial capital of India, one of the world’s largest cities, is at risk of being wiped out by future coastal flooding. Constructed on what was once a series of islands, the city’s historic downtown is especially vulnerable.

Its iconic Gateway of India stone arch, which oversees the Mumbai harbor waterfront, and an ancient complex of rock-cut caves on Elephanta Island could be among the beautiful places to be engulfed by the Arabian Sea.

Bangkok, Thailand

A recent study found that Bangkok could be the city that’s hit the worst by global warming in the short term. The Thai capital sits a mere 5 feet above sea level, and, like Venice, it’s sinking. Only this is happening much faster, by about an inch per year.

But Bangkok is also built on very thick clay soil, which makes it even more prone to future coastal flooding. By the end of the decade, most of the coastal areas of Tha Kham and Samut Prakan could be underwater.

As a matter of fact, so could its main airport, Suvarnabhumi International.

Bahamas

Many small island nations will be significantly affected by future coastal flooding, including The Bahamas, which was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

Because of climate change, most of Grand Bahama, including Abaco, Nassau, and Spanish Wells, are predicted to be underwater by 2050.
