6. The stomach

You probably never expected to find the stomach on the list of organs you can live without. Surprising, right? Yes, it is true that a person can live without a stomach. But how does a person remain without a stomach?

Cancer and genetic disorders are the main culprits that lead to gastrectomy (the procedure of removing the stomach). Also, some people who know that they are predisposed to certain conditions might get their stomachs removed as a preventive measure.

When someone goes through a gastrectomy, the doctors need to connect their esophagus directly to the small intestine. This procedure shortens the length of the digestive tract, and because of this, those people will need to make some changes to their diet.

But with all of this, the stomach is still one of the organs you can live without. Most people who no longer have stomachs are still capable of digesting solid food.
