1. The Florentine Diamond
The gorgeous and large yellow-green Indian diamond has been missing since the early 20th century, waiting for someone to “rescue” it. Even though its origin story is pretty controversial—some say it was the property of a powerful Indian king (just like the Pink Panther in the movie with the same name), while others claim it belonged to the Duke of Burgundy—one thing is for sure: it weighs around 137.27 carats, is extremely valuable, and is still lying somewhere in the world.
2. The Crown Jewels of Ireland
Did you know that the Crown Jewels of Ireland were stolen from Dublin Castle over 100 years ago? If you’re looking for a thrilling experience and are up for a challenge, you should know that this missing treasure is still out there for brave people to find today.
According to sources, the precious jewels were stolen in 1907, including a pendant, a diamond star, and the stunning collars of five knights of the Order. Moreover, reports evaluate the bounty at more than $1.36 today.
3. The Graff Diamonds
The talented British jeweler Graff Diamonds has been robbed several times, but the biggest and most shocking robbery happened in 2009. Believe it or not, the police officers and detectives suggest this could’ve been the biggest robbery in the history of the United Kingdom.
The New Bond Street location of the multinational chain Graff Diamonds was robbed of an estimated $65 million in watches and jewelry. As official reports say, ten people have been arrested for their role in the massive robbery, but the prey has never been found. Not yet, at least…
4. The Fenn Treasure
…Even though this missing treasure is no longer missing, the story behind it was so enticing for American citizens, we had to include it in our list!
When Forrest Fenn, a talented art dealer, was diagnosed with cancer, he decided to hide some of his fortune since he couldn’t take it with him to the grave. In the Rocky Mountains, he buried a treasure chest filled with over a million dollars worth of gold, jewels, and artifacts. His goal? To spark adventure and exploration, encouraging others to search for the hidden fortune.
Even though four people lost their lives trying to find the treasure, Mr. Fenn insisted that the bounty hunters were only 200 feet from the fortune’s location. In June 2020, only two months before the art dealer left this world behind, he confirmed that an anonymous man from the eastern US found the treasure chest.
Moreover, sources say that the finder used the clues in Fenn’s memoir, The Thrill of the Chase, to find the exact location of the precious chest. If this isn’t an invitation for the rest of us to start seeking these missing treasures, I don’t know what is!
5. The Tomb of Tu Duc
While you can have the time of your life visiting the Tomb of Tu Duc in Hue, Vietnam, discovering the Nguyen leader’s actual burial site is a far greater challenge. According to legend, when the powerful Emperor passed away in 1883, he was buried with his immense fortune in an undisclosed location shrouded in secrecy.
To protect the treasure’s location, all those involved in the burial were executed immediately, taking the secret to their graves. To this day, the Emperor’s hidden treasure remains untouched, its whereabouts cloaked in blood, intrigue, and mystery.
6. The Scepter of Dagobert
The Scepter of Dagobert is a valuable piece of the French crown jewels and has been missing for over 200 years. The patron saint of goldsmiths, Saint Eligius, created the impressive 22-inch gold scepter in the seventh century for Dagobert I, ruler of Austrasia, Neustria, and the Franks.
Unfortunately, the scepter was stolen in 1795 by an unknown party and has yet to be discovered. Will the missing treasure ever be found? We’ll see!
7. Tucker’s Cross
The story of Tucker’s Cross is as interesting as it can be and the missing treasure is still up for grabs. First discovered in 1955 by explorer Teddy Tucker, the stunning emerald-adorned 22-karat gold cross is thought to be part of the large bounty that went down with the Spanish ship San Pedro in 1594.
The cross was sold to the Bermudan government in 1959 and proudly displayed in a local museum. However, just before Queen Elizabeth II’s scheduled visit in 1975, a shocking discovery was made: the cross had been stolen and replaced with a fake, leaving authorities scrambling to uncover the mystery of its disappearance.
8. The Antwerp Diamonds
One of the biggest diamond thefts in history took place in Antwerp, Belgium, in February 2003. A group of smart and well-prepared thieves broke into a vault containing jewels, gold, and diamonds valued at a total of $100 million.
It’s believed the thieves used sophisticated and intelligent methods, including disabling the security system and bypassing alarms to carry out the valuable prey. Even though there have been plenty of investigations and arrests, only a tiny portion of the stolen diamonds has been recovered.
According to different sources, the Antwerp Diamonds are considered a missing treasure, waiting to be recovered. Some people believe the jewels are smuggled and sold on the black market, while others believe they’ve been melted down or hidden away so nobody can put their hands on them. Whatever the truth may be, this robbery is still one of the most popular and unresolved crimes in the world.
9. The Patiala Necklace
The Patiala Necklace, created in 1928 for Bhupinder Singh, Maharaja of the British Indian princely state of Patiala, mysteriously disappeared after 20 years from the Patiala Royal Treasury.
Designed by the prestigious House of Cartier, the necklace was a brilliant masterpiece, adorned with 2,930 diamonds, including a breathtaking 234.65-carat diamond, and accented with exquisite Burmese rubies.
While a piece of the necklace was found in a London thrift shop in 1998, the jewelers have never been found. However, Cartier bought the necklace and replaced the missing stones with gorgeous replicas.
This story leaves us wondering—could these precious stones be scattered as missing treasures, hidden in thrift stores around the world?
